Easy DIY Beanie Baby Costume: The Cutest Last-Minute Toddler Halloween Outfit

Welcome, my dear mums!

Yesterday, I found a photo from my child's first Halloween while browsing old albums. Oh, it tugged at my heartstrings! Time flies so fast, doesn't it? It seems like yesterday they were small, innocent babies in your arms. Now, they’re running all over the house and scattering things everywhere.

As the season of festivals and costume parties approaches, I know exactly what’s on your mind. You want your little one to look the absolute cutest at Halloween or any fancy-dress party. But let’s be honest with each other: we mums get so exhausted. Who has the energy or time to spend hours sewing a tricky costume? Between changing nappies, cooking, and cleaning, it’s tough to find a moment. And don’t get me started on those pricey store-bought outfits! They scratch a child's delicate skin and can make them cry within five minutes of wearing them.

I’m excited to share my favourite, super-easy secret with you today: the "DIY Beanie Baby Costume." It’s a homemade costume that looks like a stuffed toy.

It looks cute and sweet, costs little, and is quick to make. Your child will look like a cute little stuffed animal, and they’ll stay comfortable and happy all day long. Let's see together how to make it step by step.

Why You Will Love This Simple Costume
When I first heard about this idea from another mom friend, I almost cried tears of joy. Here is why this outfit is a total lifesaver for busy moms:
  • It uses clothes you already have: You do not need to buy a special outfit. You just use a cozy onesie or a pair of pajamas that your toddler already wears and loves.
  • It keeps your baby comfortable: There are no itchy fabrics, tight elastics, or annoying masks. If your baby gets messy, you can just wash the clothes like normal.
  • It is very budget-friendly: You only need a few pieces of paper and some ribbon. You will save so much money compared to buying a costume from a store.
  • It takes less than 20 minutes: You can easily make this during your baby’s nap time. No sewing machine required!
Everything You Need to Get Started
Before we begin, let’s gather our supplies. Don't worry, you probably have almost all of these items sitting around your house right now!
  • A cute animal outfit: Find a hooded onesie, a romper, or a pajama set that looks like an animal. A brown bear, a pink bunny, a spotted puppy, or a gray kitten works perfectly. If it has little animal ears on the hood, that is even better!
  • Red poster board or thick red paper: This will be used to make the famous heart-shaped tag.
  • White paper: For the letters on the inside and outside of the tag.
  • A black marker or pen: To write your baby's name and a sweet story.
  • Glue or tape: A simple glue stick or double-sided tape works great.
  • A hole puncher: To make a small hole for the ribbon.
  • Red ribbon or yarn: To tie the tag gently to your baby's outfit.
  • Scissors: To cut out the heart shapes.
Step 1: Pick the Perfect Animal Base
First, look through your baby's closet. We want to find a one-piece outfit that makes them look like a cuddly stuffed animal.
If you don't have an animal outfit with ears, please do not panic! You can use a plain brown, black, or white onesie. You can then take a simple baby beanie hat and fabric glue two little felt circles on top to make quick ears.
The best part about using regular pajamas is that your baby already knows how they feel. They won't try to pull the costume off because it just feels like naptime clothes.
Step 2: Make the Famous TY Heart Tag
This is where the magic happens! The secret to the beanie baby costume is the iconic red heart tag. This is what turns a regular pair of pajamas into a brilliant beanie baby halloween costume.
  1. Take your red poster board and fold a piece in half, just like you are making a birthday card.
  2. Draw a large heart shape on the folded paper. Make sure the left side of the heart is on the folded crease so the heart can open and close like a real book.
  3. Cut out the heart carefully. When you unfold it, you should have a beautiful red heart card.
  4. Cut a slightly smaller heart out of your white paper. Glue this white heart inside the right-hand side of the red heart. This is where we will write our text later.
Step 3: Decorate the Outside of the Tag
Now, let's make the front of the tag look just like the real thing.
  1. Cut out the letters "t" and "y" from a piece of white paper. The "t" should be lowercase and the "y" should be uppercase, just like the real logo: ty beanie baby tag.
  2. Glue the white "ty" letters carefully onto the front of your red heart.
  3. If you want to add a little extra shine, you can use a yellow marker to draw a thin gold line around the edge of the heart, but that is totally optional!
Step 4: Write a Sweet Story Inside
This is my favorite part because it lets you be creative and sentimental. Open up the heart tag. On the white paper inside, use your black marker to write a little poem or description for your baby.
Here is an example of what you can write:
  • Name: (Put your baby's name here)
  • Date of Birth: (Put their birthday here)
  • The Poem:
I love to snuggle and crawl on the floor,
Mommy and Daddy could not love me more.
Give me a hug and a little sweet kiss,
Having a baby is pure, total bliss!
This adds such a loving, personal touch. Everyone who walks up to see your baby will want to open the tag and read what you wrote. It makes for the best photos!
Step 5: Attach the Tag Safely
Now that your tag is completely dry, we need to attach it to the costume.
  1. Use your hole puncher to make a small hole in the top left corner of the heart tag, right near the fold.
  2. Thread your red ribbon or yarn through the hole.
  3. Tie the ribbon gently around the zipper pull of the onesie, or loop it safely through a buttonhole.
Safety Note from one mom to another: Make sure the ribbon is short so it doesn't get wrapped around your baby's neck or fingers. Never leave your baby alone while they are wearing the tag, just to be completely safe!
Sweet Memories You Will Keep Forever
Once the tag is attached, your DIY costume is fully complete! You now have the cutest little stuffed animal in the whole world.
When I did this, my baby received so many compliments from our neighbors and family. Everyone loved how clever it was, and I loved how quiet and content my baby stayed the whole evening. There were no tears, no tantrums, and no fussing. When my little one got tired, they just fell asleep right in their costume because it was so soft.
When Halloween is over, do not throw the red heart tag away! Put it into your baby's memory box. Years from now, you will look back at that little paper heart and remember how tiny and sweet they were during their toddler years.
You are doing an amazing job, mama. Never forget that. Your babies don't need perfect, expensive, store-bought things. They just need your love, your hugs, and your smiles.
Have so much fun making this costume, and enjoy every single second of the holiday with your beautiful family!

Super Simple Halloween Crafts For 2-Year-Olds: Mom-Approved & Mess-Free

Hello, lovely mama! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. October has finally arrived, and you know what that means—Halloween is around the corner! I love this time of year. The crisp air, cosy sweaters, and the magic sparkling in our children's eyes make it truly special. But celebrating Halloween with a two-year-old can be a bit exhausting and challenging. I remember spending hours on Pinterest last year. I’d see these beautiful, perfect Halloween crafts and think, "Oh, my sweet little one would love making this!" Oh, how wrong I was. Five minutes into the craft, we smeared bright orange paint all over the living room carpet. My child's hair matted with sticky white glue. Glitter was stuck to the cat. It was a total disaster, and I actually cried while cleaning the floor. I learned a big lesson that day. Two-year-olds don't care about perfect crafts. They want to touch things, explore, and spend time with us. And as busy moms, we certainly don't need ...

Best and Easy Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Peacefully

Hello, my dear sisters, mothers, and friends! I hope you are well.  Today I have come to talk to you all from my heart. Sitting like this today, I remembered my past. When my son was small, he used to bother me so much that he would not sleep. I would get tired. Sometimes I would try to put him to sleep on my chest, sometimes I would carry him in my lap and sleep, sometimes I would put him in a swing and swing him, and I have also spent such nights that the whole family was sleeping and I would walk with my child and he would fall asleep like that, then when I would lay him on the bed, he would start crying again. I would feel helpless. I would blame myself for not knowing how to handle a child. Then my grandmother explained to me that this is the story of every mother. It happens to almost every mother. She made me realize that this is not my failure, but rather it is a part of the immense love that Allah has placed in the heart of a mother. She hugged me with great love an...

Best Food and Care Tips for a 16-Month-Old Baby

Hello to all my beloved mommies! Today morning, while standing in the kitchen to prepare a steaming cup of tea, my little boy hid himself behind the dining table and pulled me by tugging on the corner of my dress. This mischievous little guy reminded me of how he used to be when he was 16 months old. Well, in reality, toddler age is absolutely charming, full of innocence and blissful moments. But then again, it may be extremely exhausting too! On one hand, they make us smile from our hearts. While on the other, we just want to sit and rest for a minute.  Once there was an afternoon when I prepared some halwa with so much love for him. And when I was trying to feed him using a spoon, what happened next? He took that entire bowl and flipped it completely on his head! Seeing that adorable little face of mine laughing with halwa covering his hair, all my frustrations vanished into thin air. Truly, this is an enchanting period. Our babies are no longer mere infants who keep lying calmly...
